Plot: After meeting an mysterious girl on an dark stretch of road, a young salesman is invited to a beautiful house with bizarre secrets and no way to escape.
Originally titled NiHenjel gwa Geuretel, Hansel and Gretel is a South-Korean Fantasy/Horror film directed by Pil-Sung Yim. It is loosely based on the German fairy tale by the same name.
What we liked:
- Features an incredibly detailed set with gorgeous cinematography.
- The strong acting performances from the children in the movie add the creepiness of the tale.
- Original story-line with some nice twists along the way.
What we didn’t like:
- The movie runs on a bit long with a nearly 2 hour run-time, however its thought provoking ending is worth the wait.
Hansel and Gretel leans more towards fantasy than horror, but the movie’s lack of gore is made up for by the dark story-line and unsettling nature of many of the characters in the movie. This is one of the most overlooked horror films of the 2000s in my opinion. Highly recommended.
