The Sender (1982) Quick Review

Our Quick Reviews bring you great movie recommendations without the spoilers.

Genre:  Horror

Plot:  A disturbed telepathic man is able to transmit his dreams and visions into the minds of the people around him.

Overview:

The Sender (1982), is a little-known horror/thriller directed by Roger Christian.  Christian went on to make some really terrible films, but trust me, this one is actually good.

What we liked:

  • Relies on a creepy atmosphere and suspense to captivate the viewer, rather than blood and guts.
  • Despite its lack of gore, contains some of the most memorable scenes I’ve seen in a horror movie.
  • One of the first (of many) 80s horror films to use the “killer dreams” concept.

What we didn’t like:

  • The somewhat slow pace may be a turn-off to some.

Conclusion:

The Sender is highly original, polished and far too good to be as obscure as it is.  I’d love to see it get a Blu-ray release in the near future.  Recommended.

Rating: 7 out of 10

Here’s a great clip from the movie.  If you plan to watch the film you may want to skip this clip as the movie’s slow build up to it makes it even better:

  1. I remember seeing this and it wasn’t half bad. Pushing in some ways and weird in others. The 80’s held a kind of innocence when it came to plot and effects. They did their best to transcend the more than graphic 70’s.
